Privacy Policy for English Reading Selection Helper
This Privacy Policy explains what information the extension processes, how that information is used, when it is shared, and what choices users have.
1. Overview
English Reading Selection Helper is a Chrome extension designed to help users understand English web content. When a user selects text on a web page and chooses to use the extension, the extension can provide contextual translation and explanation, and it can optionally save selected words to the user's Eudic vocabulary list.
The extension is operated for the purpose of English reading assistance. It is not intended for advertising, profiling, selling user data, or unrelated analytics.
2. Information the extension processes
2.1 Information stored in browser storage
- OpenRouter API key entered by the user
- Eudic API key entered by the user
- User settings such as model choice, explanation mode, pronunciation preference, font size, and panel height
- Favorite-word state used to show whether a word has been saved
- Translation cache data and related expiration time
2.2 Information processed when translation is requested
- Selected text
- Context around the selected text
- Page title
- Page URL
2.3 Information processed when vocabulary sync is requested
- The selected word or phrase the user chooses to save
- The user's Eudic API key
3. How information is used
- To provide contextual translation and explanation for selected English content
- To remember extension settings and user preferences
- To reduce repeated requests by caching previous translation results
- To show whether a word has been marked as a favorite
- To save or remove a word from the user's Eudic vocabulary list when the user requests that action
4. When information is shared
The extension does not run a developer-operated backend server for these core features. However, data may be sent directly to third-party services chosen by the user or required by the feature they invoke:
- OpenRouter: when the user requests translation or explanation, the selected text, related context, page title, page URL, model choice, and the user's OpenRouter API key are sent to OpenRouter so the requested result can be generated.
- Eudic (api.frdic.com): when the user chooses to save or remove a word from a vocabulary list, the selected word and the user's Eudic API key are sent to Eudic so the vocabulary action can be completed.
- Chrome browser storage and sync services: settings and some extension data may be stored locally in the browser and, depending on the user's Chrome sync settings, may also sync through the user's Chrome account environment.
The extension does not sell personal data. It does not share user data with data brokers or advertisers. It does not use user data for creditworthiness, lending, targeted advertising, or unrelated profiling.
5. Data retention
- User settings remain in browser storage until the user changes them, clears extension data, or removes the extension.
- Translation cache entries are stored for the cache duration configured by the user and are deleted when expired or when extension data is cleared.
- Favorite-word state remains until changed by the user or until extension data is removed.
- Data sent to OpenRouter or Eudic is subject to those third parties' own retention and privacy policies.
6. Security
The extension sends requests to third-party services over HTTPS endpoints. The extension does not claim to provide a separate developer-managed encrypted storage service. Users should keep their API keys secure and use trusted browser profiles and devices.
7. User choices
- Users can choose whether to enter API keys and whether to use translation or vocabulary-sync features.
- Users can clear cached data and saved extension data by removing extension storage in Chrome or uninstalling the extension.
- Users can change settings at any time from the extension interface.
- Users can stop sending data to OpenRouter or Eudic by removing the related API keys or by not using those features.
8. Children's privacy
The extension is not specifically directed to children. If you believe personal information relating to a child has been used inappropriately through the extension, please contact us.
9. Third-party services
This extension depends on third-party services that have their own terms and privacy policies. Users should review those policies separately:
